Do you have a Tzedokah "ISHUR"?

Tomchei Tzedakah just received a call from someone in Lakewood: $7300 was withdrawn from his account - this past Motzoei Shabbos he had written a much smaller check to someone that had come to his door and the check had been altered and cashed. We then received another call with almost the exact same story - this time for $8700.

At this point we have very little additional information and are investigating. Please check your bank accounts and take whatever precautions you can.

Please feel free to email us at TomcheiTzedakah@gmail.com or call us at 732-367-7770 or at 848-210-5188 if you have any information that may be useful or if you have also been victimized.

Restaurant waiters are sometimes known to do this by altering the amount in the tip line of the credit card receipt. If you write let's say $5, do it as $5------- with a line so that they cannot add zeros.

Don't open your door to strangers no matter how they are dressed.

If this story is true, then it's very sad that people have to stoop to such low levels to make a few dollars.

There's also a problem of a major "chilul Hashem", and ultimately all tzedaka collectors end up suffering, because people start thinking that all "meshulachim" are "ganavim".

That being said, someone pointed points out to me, that לא תגנובו was written by Hashem in his Torah, for the Yidden! He says, that this is evidence that we ALL have an issue with it, which is the reason there needs to be a special "tzeevui" against it.

It does say after all that "rov yisroel ganovim" so it should come as no surprise.

All I know is that if someone added zeros to my checks they would bounce real high.
